1 movie to 2 DVDs?

i just got a DVD writer and am wondering why 1 movie won't fit on 1 DVD. the movies are only about 700 MB and DVDs are supposed to hold 4.7 GB. could someone please explain? most of these movies are downloaded so they aren't backups. also, is there a way to fit a movie onto 1 DVD? thanks.

sorry about that. my comp froze when i posted the first time, so i didn't think it went through. and by downloaded, i meant my roommate has a huge movie collection and makes backups which he puts on my computer because he doesn't have one. sorry about the confusion, it won't happen again.
