Compressing .ses files

I'm trying to convert VHS to DVD. I used Windows XP Media Center Edition to copy into my hard drive. It is a .dvr-ms file. I used my bundles software Sonic MyDVD v4.5 to convert to DVD but my burn light does not turn on because my file is too large. The file in MyDVD is .ses. So how do I compress this file type?
