    No CD Message

I have burned several DVD+R's using Nero. I ripped the original DVD using Smart Ripper, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink internal ripper.

Everything seems to work well, by the way I think DVD shrink is a superb piece of work congratulations to the people responsible.

I have checked the final result and there is a VIDEO_TS & AUDIO folder, the disc plays on my PC using Cyberlink PowerVideo. However when I try to play it in my stand alone DVD player I get a "no disc message"

    What could be the problem?

    likely it's either....

    (1) your DVD player won't play backups (DVD+Rs)

    or...

    (2) your DVD player can't read the media type you're using

I'd try a different type of media first (I find the darker dye disks work better for me - such as Ritek G03/G04 dye). And make sure your DVD drive is capable of reading dvd+r. Oh, and you can also try burning your DVD as slow as it will burn. I used to have problems with burning at 2x with my own DVD deck.

sounds dangerously like the media incompatibility issue.
You say you've burned several discs before. Did they work in your standalone?
Have you ran a lens cleaner disc through your player?

Thanks JohnyThunder & sfheath for your responses.

I will try a different brand of disc and see if that makes a difference. I have checked the manual for my DVD player and there is no mention of what type of discs it will/will not play.

I'll post the results when I have them

thanks for the reply sfheath, I checked the link and found that my player will not play DVD+R. However it seems to like DVD-R.

I'll try those and see how they go.

Go here http://www.herrie.org/index.php and download the 'NEC 108v2 Special (Booktype) Holiday Edition' firmware for your drive.

This will allow you to use bitsetting software to change the book type to DVD-ROM, DVD-R or DVD-RW and allow the disk to play in your player.

You can find the bitsetting software below.

First thanks to sfheath for the link. I have now changed the media I'm using to DVD-R and had a success. My back up DVD plays in my stand alone player.

ashy many thanks for your reply but as a novice fairly new to this area of burning/authoring you advice was a little advanced for me.

My internal DVD writer will write both - & + types of DVD so what can I achieve using the software you advised?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but unless I ask I'll never find out.

It will allow you to use DVD+R disks with your DVD player.

The firmware will allow you to use a bitsetting tool.
Firmware is simply the internal software your burner uses.

All DVD's have a small area of information on the DVD called 'book type' which will tell the player what sort of disk it is.
Some players do not recognize this info on certain disks and therefore give a 'no disk' error.

With bitsetting software you can set this 'book type' on the disk to whatever you wish, so that your DVD player will think that a DVD+R disk is infact a DVD-R or even a DVD-ROM and will accept it.

Ashy: I'm curious as to why you're recommending a NEC firmware upgrade without details of DenisC's burner brand?

                      Strange?
I must be getting mixed up with another thread.
I could have sworn that somewhere the NEC was mentioned, but apparantly not.
Apologies if this info doesn't refer to the thread. Just a mistake on my part.

No problem here Interesting note though: there is a new firmware for the NEC 1300! Now, where did I put those Princos ... ?
