are external burners only for notebooks?

can anyone tell me if an external dvd burner will work with a desktop? i don't know much about it, and i don't know how to install an internal burner, so if any of you can give me a hand here i will appreciate it .

my brother has 2 computers and he uses an external burner.pull the cord out of the usb slot walk over and plug into other computer. real easy.
ps I would try to stay with usb 2
