how about "ZIP"-ing movies after ripping with shrink?

hard drive getting full (200 gig ),,of ripped movies..
may not want to "shrink" all of them to dvd,or may want to later.
so storage space is getting to be a problem..
can i "zip" these to compress them and uncompress "unzip"
them later to "shrink" them to a dvd ,?
i think what i am looking for here is will there be any loss of
quality in the process..??
i try to burn with as little comp as i can to keep quality up..
dont want to lose any..
has anybody done this and can qualify thier opinions of the result ??
or should i be searching on "winzip"-'s site ?

Zipping (or RAR, or other similar compression concepts) ripped videos is a "no-no" - as it can lead to permanently corrupted files...

External hard drives are pretty cheap these days. You might want to pick one up. 80GB to 120GB are common and not expensive. You could also burn your files as data onto a DVD for storage.

You wouldn't get much space back anyway. I tried it. The zip file was just 30MB smaller.

I bought an 80Gb drive specifically for video, mostly DVB recordings. I try to transfer these to R for the definite keeps or RW for the "not sure"s at around the same frequency of recordings, hence keeping within my limit.
If you need more mass storage and have run out of IDE channels how about USB hard drive?
