Will i need a NEW burner? :(

I just got my first DVD burner (TDK 880N) and I love it. Only problem is that I now hear that dual-layer burners and media aren't far off, or are already here. I've read that no new hardware or lasers are actually required for dual layer burning, only firmware upgrades to refocus the laser. Is this true? Does anyone know if manufacturers of current burners going to release firmware upgrades to enable "first generation" burners to write on dual layer media?
