Older notebook's DVD player will not read DVD-R's...help!

Is there a different method of creating DVD-R's that would help to make them playable in my older notebook's DVD player? So far, I've mostly used DVD-shrink. Commercial DVD's play great, but I cannot get it to even recognize that there's a disk in the drive at all when it's a DVD-R (CD-R's work fine).

I have the sameproblem with my laptop I asked the same question. If you look under wont play you will see the answer you are looking for.
