    ISO file bloat?

I'm confused about ISO file sizes...

If I rip a SSDL DVD I end up with, in this case, 7.75GB of files, which I can build into an ISO file using Imgtool which has a size of the same 7.75 GB.

But if I split the DVD using IfoEdit, I end up with 2 directories of 3.90 GB and 4.20 GB (total: 8.11 GB).

Putting the 3.90GB directory through Imgtool gives me an ISO of 5.89 GB -- too big to write to DVDR. (The second is even larger -- I forget the exact size).

Can anyone tell me what on earth is going on here? Why is the ISO size sometimes the same as the files that go into it, and sometimes so much larger?

And, what do I need to do in order to write this split DVD to disk?

    In hope,

    #2
Forgot to mention three other things -- don't know if either is relevant or not.

    1. This is a PAL DVD

    2. If I run ifoedit's "get vts sectors" prior to using ImgTool, it fails with the messages below. I can only use Imgtool if I do *not* correct the sector addressses.

/cygdrive/d/Program Files/ImgTool/Classic_0.91.3/mkisofs: Implementation botch. Video pad for file VTS_02_0.VOB is -19558
/cygdrive/d/Program Files/ImgTool/Classic_0.91.3/mkisofs: Either the *.IFO file is bad or you found a mkisofs bug.

    3. Imgtool reports when creating disk 1 that I am missing VOBs. These are, I think, the VOBs for the extra stuff I'm putting on disk 2, so I let it go... Is that correct?
