Excessive disk activity with Nero Express

I just bought a DVD writer and use Nero 6.3.117 which does support my writer. When I insert a blank dvd (+R or -R) in response to NeroExpress requesting one, the computer hangs up for a while with the disk activity light on continuously for about 5 mins. Then the disc is ejected. Pushing the tray back results a repeat of the hangup and eventually Nero gives up.

I have no clue what could be the problem. I have plenty of free disc space, I checked the DVD is empty. I can read CD/DVDs OK when Nero is not running

Has anyone seen this behaviour?

first, go to the official site of your writer's brand. download and install the latest firmware.

does this happen only with dvd's or cd's as well? if it only affects dvd's, maybe the brand of dvd's you are using are incompatible with your writer. to check the recommended brand, check your manual or go to http://www.videohelp.com for a compatibility list.
