possible to rename files on data dvd?

i know that it's possible to update files on a non-finalized data cd-r (by technically appending a newer copy of the same file to the disc), but would it be possible to rename several files on a data dvd-r? without actually re-burning them all, that is?

No I think you will need to re burn as you can only add to a multisession disc not alter whats already on it.

well, i know you can overwrite old versions of files on a disc with new ones (by adding the new file and doing something to disc's table of contents, or however it keeps track of all the files on it).

i couldnt just do something to the part of the disc that keeps track of all the files to overwrite just the filenames?

To my knowledge the only way you can rename file/s is on a rw disk. A -/+r once written can't be altered
