Unable to fit .dv file on DVD using TOAST 6

I'm trying to burn a DVD from a .dv file of a 90 minute video that I digitized from VHS using formac studio's A/D converter. The formac studio software allowed me to burn a large 18 gig file that contained the whole 90 minute video.

But when I dropped this .dv into the Toast 6 Platinum window and tried to burn it to a blank DVD in my external La Cie DVD burner, I got an error message that read:

"There's not enough free space on this disc: 4445973 sectors (8.5 GB) are needed, 2298496 sectors (4.4 GB) are available."

Obviously, a 4.x gig DVD is designed to hold more than 12 minutes of video, no? So, what do I need to do to make the file fit on a DVD?

Tangentially, I also tried to convert a fresh file of the same tape using Toast's DV conversion "camera," but ran into a whole other problem when I filled the available space on my hard drive with that massive file and was unable to stop the recording without losing the file completely.

Thanks for any help you may offer!
