8X DVD-R won't burn at 4X

I just bought a cake pack of 50 8X Memorex DVD-R and tried to burn a back-up DVD from my HD in my Lite-On 411s. It defaulted to a slo-o-o-w 1X. Do I have to update the firmware from Lite-On or is the new media just of poor quality. I already have burned about 50 4X DVD+R Memorex with no major problems.

What burning program do you use? Is it a demo or bought version?

I'm using DVDShrink to rip and Nero OEM Suite (bought) to burn.

I firmware upgrade is always nice.

I can't really understand why you purchase 8x DVD media. Your burner can only deal with max 4x media. Sounds to me as a waste of money.

It may not be worth the effort for me to do this; I'll probably just return the blanks (which were on sale at OD for only $29.99) and just buy some 4X disks. Anyway, thanks for the help.

OD will probably not take them back..I have tried that before...good luck...

Just an update: Went to OD this evening, before I saw the previous response, and explained my problem (8X DVD only burning at 1X), and my lack of desire to flash my firmware. They quickly refunded my credit card even though I was returning the cake pack in a 1 missing in action condition.
