plextor 712a & DVDshrink encode slow

i recently purchased 2 plextor 712a and wanted to backup some
dvds . DVDshrink works fine and all but the encoding takes almost
50-60 minutes
and another 50 minutes to write (BACKUP) to dvd. have nero
full version

i have no eac checked
checked admin tools>computer mgt>system tools>device mgr>
ide ATA / ATAPI controllers doubleclicked my ide controller
under my primary channel my two maxtor 160gigs ,
sec. channel - my two plextor dvdr px712a
under transfer mode i have let bios select transfer mode.
should i manually change this to something else

i have the update firmware from the plextor site.
computer is amd athlon xp2200+ 1.25gigs ram
3- 160gigs and 1- 250 gigs maxtors and 2 plextor 712s
os- windows xp sp2
