Nero lead in and out

I have read that the new Nero has a shorter lead in and out. I just notice. I did a direct disk copy of one of my backups, same media and the copy has more "unused" space in the center and about double that amount on the outside. Is there a way to tell how much space is not used. I would like to know if this could lead to more space for backups.

you can supposedly record an extra of 12mb onto a cd...
