    best software?

I have not had any luck with copying my dvd collection to my laptop hard drive for travelling. Im not trying to burn it for any illegal purpose, but i dont want to take along a bunch of cd's with me either. I have a P4 2.8 gig laptop (16" screen)- dvd/cdrw drive + 512m-ram. And a 60 gig harddrive. I know most dvd can be converted to good quality AVI files (or other type) at about 800 meg size, yet everything I have gotten a hold of, either doesnt work, or is a piece of crap or after 20 hours still says its doing something. Or i have to adjust 10-20 settings that I just dont understand...

Is their anything out their (and im willing to pay), that I can just place a dvd movie in my drive and copy it to my harddrive for viewng and it will compress it to no more then 1 gig per movie???
