Where are the files located on a DVD?

This may seem like a dumb question but.

If you discover your DVD has errors on it after doing a quality test (especially near the end) is there a way to tell what files are located at the point where the fails happen?

If the errors occur in the trailers section of the movie I wouldn’t really care.

Any ideas to see which files are located where on a disk?

EZcd creator used to have this option long ago when reading in a session fromt a burn disk.

I do not know (or think there are ) any program that will give you the exact file that is corruped (bad).

Only thing I can think of is to insert your burned DVD in DVD Shrink and then do a copying/ripping to your hard disk and at the same time have your preview turned on - it could error out with a crc error and at the same time you should see in the preview what section it is.

You can see in DVD Info Pro/Nero CD DVD Speed etc where your red dots are and you can figure out how many Mb there is per square (4480/no. of squares in the grid). So you can tell, pretty much exactly where your errors are.

The disk is assembled in this order:

VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_X.VOB (0-as many as 9)
VTS_01_0.BUP
etc for VTS_02 and on

Any editor can tell you what's in each VTS, perhaps PgcEdit's interface is best. But your main movie will be obvious - it will be the VTS with as many as 5.VOBs. If it's VTS_01 and your errors are at the end and there are lots of other VTS's then your errors are in the extras.

Perhaps an ever so slightly indirect method, would be to use DVD Decrypter to rip the problem DVD - and look at the display. Among other information, it displays the specific .VOB being processed. When an error is encountered, make note of the .VOB. Playback that specific .VOB on your PC and you'll see where the problem is...

I have used the way Setarip has suggested to determine problematic VOB files. If the VOB files are in a trailer, then the DVD can be reathored or the VOB be blanked out.

If the problem is in the credits. It can be salvaged.

Shrink 3.2 analyses the DVD which will likely crash. However Shrink 1.03 works. It is possible to crop the credits before the CRC problem occurs. Then it quick analyses just the kept part and not the bit with the CRC.

If the problem is during the actual film and before the credits then the same procedure can be used but there will be part of the film missing. Shrink 1.03 can process before and after the CRC error doing two separate prcesses. Then, use a later version of Shrink to put both parts on one DVD using reauthor. I don't see anyone doing that though as a chunk of the film would be missing.
