    Making an *.avi file seekable

    First the facts:

I have downloaded an avi movie from a site, legaly.
I have used a download manager.

Sadly, the download stopped at 600Mb out of 650Mb.
I'm not going to try again, because I have download limits.

I had to fix the movie with Vitrtualdub to be able to watch it.

    So far, so good.

But the problem is: the movie is not seekable.
It looks like there are no keyframes.

    How come?
    1. It might be encoded this way or...
    2. It is a result of the partial downloaded file.

Now I want to cut out pieces of the movie. But this doesn't work as I can't move trough the movie.

Now the questions are: can I make the movie seekable?
Can I put keyframes in it?

Answer: yes, if you decode it and encode it again.
But I'm not very enthousiastic about that, because its gonna take me much time.

Or in one short question: Can I make it seekable without decoding, decompressing it (and thus loosing quality when reencoding) ?

If you still have the original incomplete file you downloaded, back it up, and attempt divfix.

I downloaded the software 'DivXFix' from the divx digest board.

      It worked realy well.
I'm happy to have saved the original partially downloaded file.
I already made it viewable with Virtualdub, but the new 'DivxFix' result is much better.

      The movie is seekable now.

Thanks, I'm a little smarter now.
