    Cropping a converted AVI

Ive got a DVD rip of ALiens and its 942mb, which is too big for a CD, also the wally who encoded it has left the black borders on it, how do I crop these off without re-encoding it, as virtuadub seems to want to try and compress it again. Also if its still too big after cutting the credits is there a way to cut some or all of the film to a slightly lower bit rate to drop it to around 800mb.

yes you can do all that but you have to recompress it. there's no way around it that I know of.

oops. guess you want to know "how" eh? sorry. Anywho, in vdub to change the bitrate put the video on full processing mode, go to compression, choose your codec and hit configure. You can then input your new bitrate.

oh.... but surely compressing an already compressed avi will yeild poor vid quality?

That's true. It depends on the extent of course. But as far as I know unless you have access to the vob files you have no choice.
