Low framerate when compressing to 720x576

I usually record in 384x288 for no particular reason but now i thought that perhaps I should try a new, bigger resolution: 720x576. One problem appears, when compressing the recorded video from Picvideo mjpeg codec into DivX 5.01 the framerate drops from 24fps to 6-10fps (according to virtualdub's statusbar and later on when watching the movie you notice the difference). Is it just my processor (PIII 933mhz) that limits it or can I perhaps change some settings?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

A 720*576 contains close to 4 times as may pixels as 384*288. A 75% fps reduction is pretty much in line with what to expect.

To speed up the encoding make sure that you are using fast recompression. If you need to do any filtering do it in avisynth.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.
