Help!! svcd to divx = really big file

Ok I'm trying to convert a two cd svcd to a 1 cd divx but everytime I try to do it I end up getting a really big file <5GB.

I know it has to do with the resoloution but I have no idea what to set it to.

    Here are the known settings from dvd2avi;

    PAL
    4:3
    25fps
    progressive

And that's all I know about it. I'm gknot but I don't know what to set the resolution at. Should I move it to the right of the scale or to the left of the scale?
What resolution should I be shooting for?

Firstly, are you sure you are working with 2 svcds? The reason why I'm asking is because of the file size you end up with. Its far to big to have come from two svcds.

Secondly, if it is svcds that you are working of, when you open the *.mpg file and save the file as avi do you get a video compresion window that pops up asking for the codec to be used for compression?

Resolution has nothing to do with your final filesize. It has only impact on the quality you will get with low bitrates. I think the resolution of your SVCDs will be OK for DivX.
If you want to fit two SVCDs onto one CD using DivX you have to calculate the bitrate of your video and audio first. A bitrate calculator can be downloaded here at this site at the download section of DivX Digest. I don't use GKnot but I think there's also one built in.

Yeah I thought gknot did it for you.

And the svcds are only 1.45GB and kr0-n0s I believe I did get that pop-up and had to play them through windvd.

Hmm.. I've never set the bitrate before in gknot, I guess I'll have to look for the option and play with it.

        Thanks for the help.

The bitrate is not only an option. It's the key setting to get the desired file size. Almost all other settings depend on the bitrate. Please keep this in mind.

Yeah I realize that but I thought the whole point was that gknot did that stuff for you?

Like I said I've never had to play with that before.

And now for some reason I can't do a compressionability check, whereas I was able to do it before.

As I said, I personally don't use GKnot. So I don't know what it is doing automatically for you. I allways use DVD2AVI and VirtualDub to do my conversions. But the bitrate issue is definitly your problem you have to go into. Maybe it's a bug in Gknot. You never know, no program is perfect neither are the people who use them.
