What would cause this (horizantal breaking)

I've encoded a dvd rip to a 1 cd divx 5.02 rip using gknot.
When I play the movie if there is a really fast scene I can just barely see what looks like tearing. If you have ever played a PC game and turned of v-sync that would be a similar effect.

What could be causing this and how would I get rid of it?

And just to clarify it's not a deinterlacing problem, I've had that before and this isn't the same.

I'll try. Does the playa have screenshot capability?

Not to my knowledge, but I admit that I know next to nothing about it. It's just about the wost video player there is. Use virtualdub instead, [ctrl]+[1] copies a frame to clipboard.

I can't screen capture it, it doesn't show up when moving from by frame. I think it is just a v-sync problem.

By the way what player do you prefer?

Oh and the one I use is called divx player 2.0 alpha not the playa.

OK so it's just a playback problem

My preferred player is WMP6.4. On systems where newer versions have been installed by mistake, you can still find viersion 6.4 under the name mplayer2.exe.

The Divx Player is, in my opinion, complete crap.

No way are you serious? I can easily see the difference in the quality in the picture between the two!

If I have some time I'll see if I can put up two screenshots, one from each player.

This is just a matter of the post processing done by the codec. To change this in WMP6.4 Goto File->properties->advanced->'divx decoder filter'->properties.

I'am not sure where these settings are located in the divx player.

Ok I compared the two after configuring the quality to be the same on both.

Visually they look roughly the same but my head thought there might be a slight image quality increase with the divx player. However windows media player 6.4 used about 10MB less and about 10% lest CPU power. So performance wise wmp is definitely the better player.

Yep, this is just one of the advantages of WMP6.4. In addition the divx player doesn't have proper direct show filter support, which means that you can't use subtitles.
