Divx AVI file size

I use FlaskMpeg to convert my ripped DVD files to Divx AVI. The files are very large due to the fact that the audio is PCM WAV. I tried and could not encode to MP3. I think my sound card does not support it. Is there anyway to compress my files to a smaller size?

A typical problem with Flask. Here's my recommended fix:
1. Extract audio as WAV using Graphedit/Vob2audio
2. If you wish, you can amplify the volume of the WAV using a sound editor, such as Cooledit
3. Convert the WAV to MP3 using an mp3 encoder, such as LAME
4. Mux the MP3 with the video from Flask using nandub
