Is there anyway to compress an existing divx file to a smaller size without going through the entire process of extracting both the Video and Audio files seperate and then combining?

Yes virtualdub will do that.

If you only want to recompress the audio just set the video to direct stream copy, set audio to full processing mode and select the compression mode.
