    Fixing Invalid Files

Got an AVI file that just won't open. It won't play in mediaplayer and VirtualDub gives me an error message along the lines of

Invalid AVI File: chunk at * extends outside parent by *

Is there any way to fix this?

1.use Gspot to determine what kind of avi it is

2.once you know (or even without knowing) try to doctor it with either "video fixer"(shareware with a few days of trial)
    , "avifix" or "divfix".

    3. (not according your request) Give Ms mediaplayer
a kick in its ass and use Bsplayer or MV2 player .

Note: work on a copy of that avifile.
refer to the software section of this site to obtain the software.

    good luck!!

I tried rebuilding the index in Divfix, it gave me a playable 10 second clip, but GSpot says its an Mp43 file over an hour long

I hope you worked on a copy as I suggested.

        also work on a copy!!!

if that does not help either ....avi fix
..... or if possible: do the following

          original postet by setarip:

          1) Load the .AVI file into the most recent version of either VirtualDub (or VirtualDubMod)

          2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy"

          3) Select "Scan for errors"

          4) Select "Mask Bad Frames"

          5) Save with a new filename

          good luck!!!
