appending error vbr virtualdub

Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way to join variable bit rate files without uncompressing and recompressing as constant bit rate. I download video files that i can usually join but some of them have vbr problems that virtualdub does not allow me to join these avi files. Is there a straightforward program that allows me to append files without goin through all that hassle. I tried virtualdubmod but that didnt seem to work.
