help converting avi/divx to mpeg-1

I am using tmpgENC and trying to convert the avi file to either mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 but all i am getting is a green screen. i have downloaded divx codecs and tried to mess w/the enviormental settings but to no success, i am able to convert a mpeg-1 file to mpeg-2 w/no problems so i am at a loss w/what to do next. any suggestions would help , thanks. also note that i am able to watch the avi file w/no problems using windows media player.

1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box
