vcd -> divx sound gets all strange

i compressed a vcd i, and now i get the strangest sound effect when playing it: i have a tinkly sound in the background, like there is a decorative little waterfall there or something. realoading the sourcefile into virtualdub, i noticed that virtualdub plays it back with this sound, mplayerc and windows media player, however, do not.
suggestions, anyone?

You originally stated that these two players do NOT play it back with "this sound". Now you're saying that these two players DO play it back with this sound.

Please clarify...
