I have recently formatted a pc and i'm tryin to play an avi movie
which was was previously encoded with gknot using divxcodec.
every time i try to play using wmp9 nothing happens do i need
to install something codecs players etc before i play.

Yes, if you have a film that has been encoded in the DivX format then you need the codec (just the standard will do) from here http://www.divx.com/divx look on your left under the part where they show you what codecs they have and you'll find the link for the standard codec.
