need help abt encoding

i am invloved in an academic project , and i am interesed in knowing the various algorithms used by the encoders to compress the movies .
i will really appreciate if any one explain me in simple word or just send me the URL to any document having the stuff which i need .

it is really horrible that still i didn't got reply for the msg which iposted 4 days ago. I am at digital digest forum , where most of the users are engaged in digital works. plz plz plz i need help , even a refrence to a web page having some help will be appreciated a lot.
