DivX resolutions (wide screen vs. normal)

I always use 640*480 resolution for converting DVD to DIVX in ImTOO DVD ripper.
My question is does this resolution setting preserve the widescreen format (if there is any) of DVD? Or I should use different resolution for widescreen and normal mode?
    Please help.

If your dvd has the black bars "built into it" then it's okay to have your video at this resolution. Although i always crop mine off when i'm encoding. When encoding with a dvd that has no black bars built into it, then you will have to go for something like, 640x360. If you don't go for something like this then you will be watching a film with the characters stretched.
