Subtitles from dvd to divx

I want to make a divx from a dvd with the subtitles. I know how to use subrip but is there a more "direct" way to make it? I mean, can I rip the dvd with the subtitle instead of rip the subtitle in another file and then put it into the divx file? When I rip with subrip, the file is almost unusable, there's spaces almost everywhere.
