Finalized by British researchers, the Mods technology will permit to accommodate on only one disk 1000 Go of data, either the equivalent of 472 hours of video in DVD quality.

Before even the arrival of the DVDS Blu-Rays (blue laser) foreseen for 2005 on the European market, some British academic researchers presented an even more effective technology in term of capacity. This one could revolutionize the world of the storage indeed from some years on.

Again to the experimental stage, this new technology, baptized Mods (Multiplexed Optical Data Storage) would permit to lodge on only one optic disk until 1 téraoctet of data (1000 gigabytes), the equivalent of 472 hours of movie in DVD quality.

Light under control

As well as the DVD or the CD-ROM, the Mods disks are based on a laser reading, but, in fact, they don't think the light of the same way. Usually, the reader sends a laser ray that touches either a hollow, either a full on the surface of the disk, what corresponds to the detection of two different states (0 or 1).

The Mods technology permits, as for her, to detect at the time of reading several angles different from light, therefore several states (one already speaks of several hundreds of variations). A Mods disk can store a lot more information then: 250 Go of data by layer, either ten times the capacity of a disk Blu-Ray.

"It was necessary for us to finalize a precise method of calculation of the properties of the reflexive light, explained to profess it Peter Törôk of the imperial College of London. We use a mixture of techniques numeric and analytic thanks to which us treat rigorous, and non approximate way, the diffusion of light since the surface of the disk". The researchers consider using the technology in disks of a smaller diameter than the one of a present DVD. What will permit to equip, for example, of the mobile devices... but not before five, or even ten years.
