Many of you may already know this, but:
If you have two hard drives, you can really speed up encoding by reading your source files from one drive and writing your DivX file to the other. If you have three drives, you can encode even faster by also setting your Divx.log and Mvinfo.bin files to the third drive. (You can change these files' locations in the first DivX setup page.) This lets your system access all the files at once instead of having to jump between them.
If you don't have a second or third drive, you can still enjoy faster speed by changing the location of Divx.log to a RAMdisk. A RAMdisk program turns part of your RAM into a virtual hard drive that actually appears in your Windows device list as a separate drive. Needless to say, it's much faster than a real hard drive. Here's a page with links to freeware and shareware RAMdisks for various OS's:
Just be sure to create a RAMdisk big enough for your Divx.log. (I find that mine are about 13-14 MB for two-hour movies.) And remember that Mvinfo.bin is usually over 100 MB---so don't try to write that to RAMdisk too, unless you have quite a big one!
