Rip and Compress at the same time ?

I want to rip a DVD, and the main score is 8 GB .VODs.

I want it in one piece, but if I rip it I have to have 8 GB space on my drive, plus space for when I convert it.

Isn't it possible to rip and compress in one go, to get one large divx file (for instance 800 MB) in one go ?

    Thank you for answering,

    TD

Provided the DVD isn't protected (which is not always the case a lot of time), you can do the encoding straight from the DVD drive. However, you'll end up ruining the drive (imagine it running continuously for hours of the encoding).

Juuuust, perfect, thank you for a quick answer, Enchanter !

I still hoped someone would answer, "just use this xyz software, and you can do all in one go".

Is it really hard on the DVD drive ?

Wouldn't it cache, and leave the drive equally worked out as if I ripped the files first ?

Oh, well, now I know what to do - this, or buy an extra hard drive !

        Thanx

The cache is small and won't be able to cover the gigabytes of data on the DVD disc.

It's of course a good idea to buy a new HD, given the low price of these devices nowadays, rather than destroying your DVD drive.

            DivX to VCD/SVCD ?

I have some DivX files, one about 600 MB. If I want to see this on my DVD, I suppose it must be converted to something the DVD supports - I guess DivX is not one of the codecs it can use.

Apart from DVD and various sound formats, the manual says my DVD can play VCD and SVCD.

How can I change the 600MB DivX file to either VCD or SVCD, and can I expect it to be one small enough in size to be on one CD, or must it be split into two ?

            Thank you,

            TD

Nero 5.5 can do the automatic conversion of avi into VCD format. TMPGEnc offers more advanced controls for conversion to MPEG files though.

I don't think you can fit the whole movie onto 1 CD only. Generally, you will need 2 CDs or more. Splitting the movie into chunks that will fit onto 1 VCD (Can't remember the exact length) is the way to go.

I'm found in Australia, as can be seen below my nick.

                  I'm online pretty often anyway.
