    No audio using TMPGEnc

    Et al,

    It seems that TMPGEnc (Plus 2.5) will no longer process the audio on any of the DivX AVIs I DL these days. It used to do this; maybe I've added a codec package that screwed things up? Sometimes when I open the AVI in TMPGEnc it will autoadd the file into the audio source; sometimes not. But even if it does, I get no audio when encoding.

    The pertinent file properties (ala VDub) show:

    Video stream - Decompressor: DivX MPEG-4 Low-Motion
    Audio stream - Sampling rate: 48000Hz, Channels: 2(Stereo), Compression: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec

    I can of course seperate the audio & video via VDub, then load them into TMPGEnc. But this is frustrating since TMPGEnc used to not require this. What am I missing? Just FYI, I mostly use the TMPGEnc wizard and the SVCD NTSC profiles.

    TIA,

    Assuming that this is a purchased version of TMPGEnc Plus (and not a possibly flawed warez version):

    "Sometimes when I open the AVI in TMPGEnc it will autoadd the file into the audio source; sometimes not"

    When it DOESN'T, chances are the 48,000 MP3 audio stream is Variable Bit Rate (VBR), which TMPGEnc can't process. You'll have to convert it to either Constant Bit Rate (CBR) MP3 format or WAV format.

    As far as the "pertinent" information, I'd suggest that you load the DivX-compressed .AVI file into VirtualDub and from under the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information".

    Post that information here.

      Ah, I see. I just checked the last few DivX AVIs that have given me this problem and yes, that is the case. Thank you. Guess I'm stuck with the intermediate VDub step then.

      Just curious, is this the "norm" for DivX AVIs these days? These are primarily series and DVD rips off the 'net.

        My pleasure ;>}

        As far as your question regarding the "norm" for what's being downloaded from the 'net, I'm afraid you're asking the wrong person. I create my own DivX-compressed .AVIs, as well as other formats - and have never downloaded any (nor will I ever).

        I'd suggest that you use Nandub (which can readily handle VBR MP3) to extract the audio portion as a 44,100 WAV file. After you've saved the WAV file, then set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying", set "Audio" to "No audio" and save the silent .AVI with a new filename. TMPGEnc will "love" these two files ;>}
