mpeg to divx

i am using windows xp pro, and i have a few mpeg video files that i want to convert to divx, how do i do it, do i need special hardware or what?, i also have an ati rage 128 pro video card.
I want to make them smaller so that i may post them on my website for people to watch.

If they are in MPEG1 format, VirtualDub should be able to convert them. Flask (and other similar programs) can convert both MPEG1 and Mpeg2 formats to .AVI...

ok after i convert them to avi, how do i convert them to divx?

erm, use the DIVX codec in Virtualdub when encoding to avi!

Avi are various formats, one of them which is of DIVX.

In virtualdub, when you open the MPEg 1 file:

goto video > compression

and select the low/fast motion codec (install DIVX 3.11alpha)

Low motion is great quality, sometimes fast motion is to (I love it!)

Get a bitrate calc from www.divx-digest.com/software

Calculate the bitrate

select the low motion codec

set the crispness to 75

slide the bitrate to whatever the bitrate was calculated to.

Hit ok,

Ok again

goto audio > full processing mode
goto audio > compression and select MP3 128kbps 44100Hz (install an MP3 codec like radium)

Then goto file > save as avi and Virtualdub will encode this mpeg as a DIVX format.
