Converting

How do I convert a dat avi file to a regular avi file?
I downloaded a few files and they are fully downloaded but they are still in dat file format.I don't know what happen.I don't know if this sound possible.

Use Virtualdub and compress using the DivX codec. Read the many excellent guides here.
