    Ripping and encoding small segments

I'm not sure if this is a ripping or a conversion question, and that's because I don't know the answer yet

Basically what I want to do is take a few small scenes from a few different DVD's (maybe 30 seconds or so) and test out various encoding techniques/settings.

Is there a way to rip only a small segment of a vob file? I don't mean just ripping out a single chapter, but ripping out say 30 seconds or so from a chapter?

If that's not possible, I'd like to know if there is a way to only encode 30 seconds or so of a ripped chapter using GK. I can't figure out how to do the audio that way (GK just extracts the whole stream). Is there a way to do this for the video stream? I thought perhaps manually modifying the length from 10 mins to 30 seconds would result in only 30 seconds of encoding, but whenever I try this, GK just doesn't open Virtual Dub for some reason. Leave the length at what it really is, and all is fine.

    Any ideas?

Use the Mark In/Out feature of Virtualdub to achieve what you want to do.

You may use the splitting option of smartripper to ripp the dvd to hdd in small segments of 20MB (or any size you want). Then you can encode a single segment with your favorite encoder.A 20 MB-vob should contain about 30 seconds of video and audio.

or when creatign a dvd2avi file, mark the segment you wish to encode, and then save it a dvd2avi project, which can be sed in Gknot.
