    bigger MB using 2-pass?!

I was just testing out the 1-pass vs 2-pass and here is the results

(these are the exact same clips)

    1 min 1-pass - 6.83MB
    1 min 2-pass - 7.20MB (after 1st run on 2-pass)

I thought running 2-pass 1st run then 2-pass 2nd run was supposed to compress better (after making that small .avi file) or something? the video looks exactly the same, but now it took 2 times as long (once for the 1st run once for the 2nd run) and is bigger. where is the benefit?

Did you use Flask to encode?

Use GKnot. That will give you better results/size. www.doom9.org

          Any guides for it?

I have been real happy with VDub... is this gonna be confusing or something? I've always been told stick with what you know and (usually) works best.

Both (1- and 2-pass) try to get the exact bitrate/filesize you selected, but in most cases they will not be to precise. There is always a little difference.

Normaly the 2-pass should be better, but if the 1-pass-video nearly reached the maximum quality the 2-pass-video can't be much better. 2-pass looks much better if you encode long movies which have more different scenes to adjust the bitrate.
              don't trust in guides

GKnot uses VirtualDub, but the good thing is that it will recalculate the bitrate after the first pass, that should give you your desired filesize. Its been one or two megs off for me when i do it right, but thats not bad.

When I use GKnot, it gives me great results for smaller file size than what I specified.
