recompressing

I want to recompress avi to make it smaller and would like to know if that method in virtualdub or nadub where you chose fast or normal recompress decompresses and then compresses (if you chose so) movie at the (almost) same time or is it something else.

Fast and normal recompress should be a little bit faster than full processing mode, but they don't work with all codecs and filters.
