Playing stumbles than catches up near key frames

It seems that near key frames the playback stoppes for about 0.5s and then the fast forwards catching up (lasting under a second). Then it plays fine untill the next key frame. I play from HDD (a fairly new one, 40Gb) on a PIII1000Mhz with 256MbRAM and Windows 2000 Proffesional. Same problem under Windows 98. Codec is DivX5 Pro 5.02. Same problem with 5.0.

So basically the playing (both audio and video) stumbles regurarly each 10 seconds or so.

This happens only with certain files, with DVD rips. It works fine with TV capture (only the widthxheight differs).

In wmp6.4 select File->Properties->advanced->'divx decoder filter'->'quality settings', and enable yuv extended mode and overlay extended mode.

Restart wmp6.4 and select File->Properties->advanced->'divx decoder filter' and move the quality slider to Min.

And make sure that the hardware acceleration on the graphics card is set to maximum.

I did, and the problem is exactly the same. It's weird, because it appears only in some of the divx5 files I play (about half).

Then I would suspect this problem is audio related. Which soundcard are you using ?.

Try loading one of the trouble makers into virtualdub select File->'File information' and post what it says.

As a test could you try removing the audio from one of the trouble makers. By selecting Video->'Direct Stream copy', Audio->'No audio' and save it as a new file in virtualdub.

I opened the file with VirtualDub, and saved it with direct stream copy (both video and audio) and the resulted file plays fine! So the problem isn't audio related. I still can't play the original files. Any ideas?

The original version probably did NOT have the audio and video interleaved, or at leat not interleaved on a 1:1 basis (the default under VirtualDub)...
