Biterate problem? can anyone plz help!

Hello,
please can anyone help me, i have an divx avi file that seems to crash straight away (blank screen with audio), i can view frames of the video in vdub but it stays blank and i can hear audio when i try to play it or use wm player.
I have looked at the properties of the file in wm player and the bitrate is not shown or is unknown.
Is their a way to repair this problem and get the correct bitrate?

Try using DivxFix or other Divx-fixing tools to repair the movie.
Alternatively, use virtualdub and scan video streams for error under "Video".

I have tried these programs as they have been useful in the past, but with this file no avail, the finished file acts exactly the same as the original. I have managed to get it to play as i have just come across ffdshow, but i cannot determine the bit rate, still shows blank in Wm player.
I now have tried another 3 Avi's that act the same!
Any suggestions?
