PlayStation 3, To Be or Not To Be?.....That is the question!

Before CES 2005, speculation ran high that Microsoft would unveil the Xbox 360 (at the time, everyone called it "Xbox 2"), but it never happened. With a release late in the year, Microsoft waited until the system was further along to pull out all the stops in the following months, making a splash at the Game Developer's Conference and E3 Expo.

Sony doesn't have that luxury. The company has promised a "Spring 2006" release date for its new console, and every month they don't ship is another million or so Xbox 360s their American competitors get into people's homes. Though Sony has never given a more specific release date than Spring 2006, nor have they mentioned whether or not that release would be worldwide or just in Japan (with North American and European launches to follow months later), the clock is ticking. March's Game Developer's Conference and May's E3 Expo may be too late. Credit & More Information: PC Mag

IIRC sony was talking about their 'cell microprocessor' (which is going to be in the ps3 if it ever gets released) at the beginning of 2005, saying it is better than any current multicore solution, and up to 10X faster than any chip available today.

now recently, they have been quoted as saying "our cell chips are as fast as the pentium, if not faster". boy has their head deflated a bit!

i hate sony after all this rootkit junk. i would much rather support microsoft, at least bill gates is a nice guy & is against doing damage to customer's hardware

I remember reading a while back that one of the computer companies(I think it was apple) was going to use the Cell in their computer but in the end the company backed out I think the reason was it didn't perform right or some thing like that. But I have a hard time believing what Sony says if I remember right they hyped up the PS2 so much and even said it would have Toy Story like graphics well that didnt happen.Look at the PS2 in the beginning you were lucky to be able to play DVDs on it and Sony even had a lawsuit against them because of the flaw also they had another case against them because of the cheap lasers they used would stop working and it caused DREs all the time the end result Sony tried to make right by fixing them for free a little to late if you ask me they should have did that in the first place instead of denying they had a problem

For me it doesnt matter when it comes out cause I will not buy one until its been out for a couple of years..get all the bugs out and get the price down..when Ps2 came out they were $500 now you can get them for $150..why pay that much when you don't have to ....

I am not happy with either of the companies. Why? well with sony and their rootkit and microsoft not supporting xbox and the 360s burning up right out of the box. Plus, you caqn do sooo much more with a pc based game, I have never and will never buy a console game...Plus with all the pc games that you can play online for free...whats the point? Console games are just a big ripoff........

I agree completely! Nintendo is good too, never have problems with my GameCube, and Nintendo has replaced my DS now like 5 times for free (I pay shipping) I would like to see Sony do that

I dont know what it is about console gaming, but I love it. Nothing better than relaxing on the couch in front of the big screen with all the amenities at hand. PC's do have the upper hand in most categories, but 55" is better than 17" for me. Plus the sound sytem is absolutely required.

Interesting what they spouted off to be true in the begining seems to be unraveling and not the great product they showed everyone, nothing more then a smoke and mirrors show from Sony as usual

I was pretty impressed with the demos from the last E3 (I think). Great graphics. There's something different from PC graphics. I can't put my finger on it.

From what I understand those weren't playing off the PS3 directly when they showed the demos they said the PS3 would be capable of these graphics.Kind of reminds of the Toy Story like graphics They said the PS2 would have

Yeah those demos/trailers were running off of a machine "comparable to the projected PS3 capabilities"
Everyone knew that it wasn't possible yet to have those graphics in realtime.

For me, as long as the visual ability of the system rivals the 360 I'll be happy. Graphics are only a small portion of the experience, after a few hours of gaming you don't even notice "those cool lighting effects" or realistic fog. If the game has the gameplay, I really don't care if it looks like a PS2 game
