Before CES 2005, speculation ran high that Microsoft would unveil the Xbox 360 (at the time, everyone called it "Xbox 2"), but it never happened. With a release late in the year, Microsoft waited until the system was further along to pull out all the stops in the following months, making a splash at the Game Developer's Conference and E3 Expo.
Sony doesn't have that luxury. The company has promised a "Spring 2006" release date for its new console, and every month they don't ship is another million or so Xbox 360s their American competitors get into people's homes. Though Sony has never given a more specific release date than Spring 2006, nor have they mentioned whether or not that release would be worldwide or just in Japan (with North American and European launches to follow months later), the clock is ticking. March's Game Developer's Conference and May's E3 Expo may be too late. Credit & More Information: PC Mag
