CDs that can damage your computer ??

'Poison' CD to catch copyists :

Sony Music has planted a "poisoned pellet" of software in Celine Dion's latest CD, A New Day Has Come, that is capable of crashing, and in cases permanently freezing, the optical drives of personal computers into which the discs are inserted.
Sounds more like a virus to me ...

I didn't have time to find other articles, so if you have another link with more detailed information, please feel free to post.

This is too far! I see lawsuits galore if this keeps up!

I hope the anti-virus program companies will post an update so as to prevent this crashing. It will be humane.

Here is a link to another problem that copy protected CDs may cause :

The latest science and technology news from New Scientist. Read exclusive articles and expert analysis on breaking stories and global developments

The CDs can cause Mac computers to freeze and then reboot to a grey screen, according to an Apple technical support report. The computer may then refuse to restart until the CD has been manually ejected, which may not be possible without opening up some parts of the machine.

Other reports suggest the CD will "merely" crash your computer, but there has been reports of something more serious :

Although Sony has since denied the allegations, it was reported by several individuals on a popular Web site's forum that, rather than causing a simple crash, the CD caused serious damage to computer firmware.

There is an article at thereg about this

it includes instructions on how to defeat the Cactus Data Shield.
And claims that the Key2Audio shield will lockup the CD-rom drive on iMacs.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

"Poison CD's"----I think its time for SONY to face the "music". It is completely wrong to damage a PC----that's what a virus would do. These companies are misbehaving, some discipline is in order.

This is a poor attempt at anti-piracy. This is as dumb as blowing up a kid's toy box for stealing his friends action figure.
