I'm using nero version 5572, and I cannot seem to get it to wite to dvd-rs or dvd-rws. it supports my burner, but it won't switch to the 4.7 gig disc size meter and wont allow me to write to dvdr or dvdrw.. it recognizes the disc in the drive as dvdr or dvdrw, but won't write to it. It has the option to write the udf cdrom and udf hybrid iso... but it doesn't seem to work.... Is there something I'm missing? Is there another way to switch it to DVD mode or someting... In nero's absence, I'be been using the software that came with the burner to burn my backups: Veritas Record Now, which seems to work ok, but It doesn't seem to have the options nero has for making a disc (writing speed selection and stuff). Can anyone give me any pointers on how to get nero to work? Thanks.

oops... my bad.
Well, you can disregaurd my initial question about making nero write to dvdrs and dvdrws, I found out through a search of the help index that atleast this version of nero does not support writing to dvdrs and dvdrws. A new queston I might inquire about is what version of nero starts with the dvdr and dvdrw capabillity? Tnanks. -
DVD-R and Nero
Hi, I'm using the latest version of Nero (5.5.9.0) to burn ripped DVDs. I had 3 work perfectly, but now for some reason my DVD-ROM cannot read the burned DVDs. I am burning in DVD-Video mode. Anyone have any ideas? My burner is a Pioneer DVR-104 and it will still burn CDs OK, and my DVD-ROM can read those, so the problem on seems to be with DVDs.
Also, anyone ever had any problems getting Windows XP to find the DVD drive or disc? MIne works OK on start up or log in, but after a while if I out a DVD in it says "no disc found". I can usually solve this with a log out/log in or a restart, but is frustrating, please help!Comment

DVD Burning
Eigoho,
You are using a good burner (pioneer a104) I suspect something has changed, somewhere.
1st , have you changed your disc media ? Name the media
2nd, Have you changed / checked your settings using Nero ? Please give details of the main settins / options
3rd, Do you know what your Nero settings should be ?
4th, The DVD's your'e ripping, have you encoded them them in the normal way, are the the right size ? Name one of the movie you are having problems with please.

fisherman,
I updated Nero in order to burn DVD video & it was working OK until after I restarted...
1) media has not changed--TDK DVD-R
video
2) nero settings--I had the same thought, although I didnt actively change anyhting the restart may have. You would think Nero's default settings would not make coasters wouldnt ya?
Anyway, here are the details: it was on (failed attempts) multisession and th finalize box was not checked. I dont know what these settings were on the successful attempts because as just used the Wizard and it worked, but it seems to me these are wrong? I am not using RWs to burn to.
3) I thought so until I started churning out coasters! I used both the Wizard and Nero Express with same results. Does the DVD-Video option set multisession/do not finalize as defaults?
4) File size is OK, combined size is 3.3GB so this is not the problem. As I said it was working until after restart so I'm thinking a settings (or software) problem.
5) The files have been ripped with Smartripper (either in "all files" or "back up" modes) then burned with Nero.
Thanks.Last edited by Eigoho; 2 Sep 2002, 09:53 AM.Comment

DVD-R and Nero
It seems I may have solved the problem. The discs are burning now & work nicely after I checked the settings as you suggested. I thought of checking them before, but as I didnt change them & thought that Nero would be smart enough to not make coasters if you use the wizard I figured that could not be the problem.
Here's what I did in case anyone else has the same problem:
Check the compilation info under "file" & make sure the "multisession" is off. Seems that if you use the wizard & select DVD-Video it turns multisession on by default & my DVD-ROM could not read the 'non-finalzed' DVD-Rs.
Live & learn! Hope this helps someone else.Comment

Re Burning
Dont use DVD Video mode in Nero, as it wont work, or may not work correctly, use DVD ISO/UDF which is the bottom icon and do not select joilet, see my DVD guide for more info on burning a DVD.

So I'd have to re-encode to a smaller bitrate then? Let's say I do that...what's the best to get it to work on standalone's? Nero is pretty simple with VCD's due to it having everything there leaving you to just drag and drop...but mpeg2 on the other hand...I'm not sure how to go about it.Comment

Re Kdiaz
Hey,
Its all there in the guide, from start to finish, How to rip, and reduce the file size, how to rempeg, incase it is too big and to burn with Nero, Its easy when you have done it a few times, if you are worried, try on a re-writable disc first, but do not finalize the disc, you can re-use it again then, but honestly, if yuo follow the guide, you wont have any problems, the guide was made as I was doing a disc, and that all works.

Followed above instructions for backing up DVD's, using DVD Decoder, IfoEdit, Nero 5.5.9.17 in UDF/ISO mode at a speed of 2.4x, did not need to reduce size to fit media.
All works superb, played back in PowerDVDxp a treat!
Until I tryed it in my Samsung standalone, picture keeps freezing & Audio jittery! HELP
The Burning was done on a DELL with XP, p4 2.2, Phillips 228 burner. The media used was 4.7gb, DVD+R Datasafe media!
