Mini DV to DVD quality issues????

Hi all,
I have just started putting my camcorder footage on dvd-r and i have a few questions.

I am using mini dv camcorder via firewire, capturing as avi, using TMPGEN to convert to mpeg 2 and then using ulead dvd movie to burn to dvd.

What sort of quality should i expect?? I thought i should get the same quality as the mini dv footage, but i am getting blocky effects like a vcd (not as bad as vcd)

Am I doing something wrong, or am i expecting too much??

Im trying something similiar and not getting good results.

Im transfering via firewire but then editing footage in Premeire 6 and then trying to use My DVD to burn it down.

The problem i get is that the footage plays back jerky.

I believe its got something to do with Frame rates and frame Size.

What resolution are you useing. Most of the time the DV uses 768 x 576 but ive been told the TV and MPEG2 requires a different sizes.

Also been looking into GOP headers which are reuired for DVD.

As you know by now this is not as simple as it looks and at the moment is anoying the hell out of me to.

So if anyone else can help, then please educate me on this matter.

Mpeg 2 uses like 720/480 and the gop is 15 gop stands for group of pictures and are VERY VERY IMPORTANT if you screw taht up you are done for resolution just means the size of the screen but that is the standard resolution or close to it, (if not you should easily recognize a setting in your program with the correct numbers)

I did this, without any problem:

* Capture in premier 6
* Save the file (duh)
* Used AviSynth to make the DV-format readable to TMPEG
* Coded with TMPEG to MPEG2, 720*576 (that's a PAL resolution, NTSC would be *480) @ 1200kbps (since I was making a miniDVD)
* Coded the audio with BeSweet to AC3, 192kbps
* used Maestro to mux them and make the DVD files

A problem with your setup might be this: I tried my Ulead Video-studio plug in, and it always re-encodes my footage (thus wasting some quality). You can easily tell if that's happened, if, during the DVD-creation proces, your HDD works like crazy, than it's not re-encoding, but just reading/writing/muxing. If, however it does read/write, say twice a second, you're probably re-encoding (you can also look at the processor power demands... 100% for a long time means re-encoding).

Yeah that may be true

But he was talking about jerky video, it doenst matter what you encode in, mov. avi. mpeg. m2v but the video shouldnt be jerky. Premeire 6 does kick ass though

I get excellent quality when I go from miniDV to DVD. i can't tell the difference between the two.

when you get the video to your hard drive as an AVI file, try playing the AVI file in windows media player and seeing if it looks ok...
if it does, then use the recent tmpegenc program which has a nice project wizard. make sure its set up for input that has interlaced video and bottom field first (usually).

it sounds like you're just encoding it wrong.
