problems with DVD+RW

I have a Philips DVDRW228 drive and I am using both Nero and Ulead DVD MovieFactory to burn DVD into a DVD+RW disk.
I can play the DVD movie from the DVD drive, but not from my
regular CD drive (like regular DVD movies that I rent), neither
on my DVD player.
I thought that the DVD+RW format would play anywhere no matter how old the computer or the DVD player. Am I
mistaken ????

DVDs, rented or otherwise, will NOT play on a CD drive.

sorry, I meant to say my regular DVD-ROM drive. Does that mean that DVD+RW's will not play on certain DVD-ROM drives ? Any web sites that list compatibities ?

I've read that using DVD Bitsetter program I can fool the DVD player into thinking that the DVD is a DVD-ROM and play a DVD+RW that it would not play otherwise. Anyone has experiences with this program ? I tried it and it can not the DVD drive settings. Any other programs that could serve this purpose ?

from my point of view you have bought the right dvd burner,
but be aware of the fact that until now NO regular DVD-burner
can create DVD's 100% compatible with all (standalone) DVD
players.....

At the moment tries Sony top conquer the market with a device
which writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW, but eventhough than
100% compatibilty is definitely not guaranteed.

Check the manufacturer of your DVD playerto find out whether
your player is compatible with the DVD+RW standard (yeah
right ... a standard they call it ....).

I've tried the Bitsetter program, but it gives me error messages
when I try to check my dvd drive with the program.

My dvd player is "supposed" to play DVD+RW's, but the comments from vcdhelp.com state that no one has been able to
actually play them on the dvd player, so there goes that claim, ha.
I would assume that the only sure way to know is to actually burn dvd's, take them to a store and start playing them on the dvd players until I find one that will play them.

I'll stick for now with VCDs.

DVD+RW

I have the same Philips burner and until now I have only
found one DVD player which was not able to play my
DVD+RW's. It consider one of the oldest internal Sony
DVD player (built in a Sony laptop).
For the rest I have had no problems at all (I have a Panasonic
standalone and have tried it as well on Sony, Kenwood
and a unknown brand).
