    misconception?

i have read the link http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/ar...ntervideo.html and down in the chart it says that dvd-r (general use) will play in a stand alone dvd player. is this right, because i have some optodisc general use dvd-r and wondering if i can use them to author some mpeg-2 files

The dvd-r format is supported by many (But perhaps not all) conventional "stand alone dvd players". To see if your dvd player supports the dvd-r format, visit vcdhelp.com

DVD authoring software as well as a dvd burner will be required to convert those mpeg 2 files to the "proper" dvd format.

some home dvd players have problems reading certain dvd-r's
I have a jvc 3 disk that can read the more expensive disks but it cant read the cheaper "white tops" at all.

I recently bought a panasonic single disk that has no trouble reading the white tops.
