Playback stutter problem

Hello all.

I'm looking for some words of advice regards a playback stutter problem I've encountered after authoring MPEG2 files using Ulead Moviefactory.

I capture my DV footage using Pinnacle and then encode the AVI file with TMPGenc. The MPEG2 file from that plays flawlessly using Powerdvd, but after authoring with Moviefactory the VOB files playback with a stutter, particularly on scenes with high motion.

Is there a cure for this ( using this software ) , such as encoding the MPEG2 file with different settings in TMPGenc ? I tend to use CQ mode at 8kbps .... does using CBR or VBR at 7kbps work better ? ... I've heard that 7kbps is more "compatible"

I had a possible similar problem. Mpegs I was editing with TmpGEnc and Ulead Video Studio 6 would play with a stutter, while mpegs I captured with Dazzle played fine. Both sets of mpegs played fine with PowerDVD.

My problem ended up being traced to my DirectShow filters for video decoders being messed up. Some mpegs when played through DirectShow would end up using the Ulead video decoder and would stutter. Other mpegs passed through DirectShow would use the PowerDVD decoder.

I used a program called Gspot which tells you what decoder is being used to find this problem, but I could never find the cause, and had to reinstall my OS and all my software to get my DirectShow filters working properly.

Question, if you play the movies from the Cut&Merge edit window in TmpGEnc do they stutter, but if played under PowerDVD they don't? That was the easy way for me to see the problem because that edit window in TmpGEnc uses DirectShow, while PowerDVD always uses its decoder.

Problem solved ....

I re-encoded the avi in TMPGenc ( sigh ...yet another 9 hours down the drain ) using CBR mode at 8kpbs and I get no stutters now. My guess is that the CQ mode pushes the bitrate too high....... and therefore exceeds the conventional standards, resulting in stutter on some players/software.

To answer your question btw .... the authored VOB files rendered from CQ mode resulted in stutter regardless of the program I used to play it back in. Interestingly, the pure MPEG2 file prior to authoring had no such defects at all. That I can't figure out why .....

So the moral of this as far as I can see ...is when encountering stutter problems on playback try re-encoding your file using a mode that limits bitrate to the maximum standard of 8kbps.
