    DVD-R, inconsistent compatibility question?

After burning a few test DVD-Rs I have seen inconsistent playability results and wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this or any suggestions.

    Burner: Pioneer DVR-A03 firmware 1.55 (I think)
    Media: Generic (not Pioneer)
    Encoding: TMPGen (newest version)
    Authoring: DVDit 2.3 PE

I have two disks I have created. Both are with all of the above, with a few differences in settings. The source is the same for both.

The input of the first was interlaced, no deinterlacing used and the output was interlaced. I used two pass variable with settings I found on this guide: http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0165394101/TMPGEnc_Template.html

In DVDit I created a project with NTSC, 4:3, Dolby Digital 2 channel audio 192.

This title played fine on my computer with WinDVD. It played on both an older Pioneer player and a new Toshiba (4700?) player. On both of these the picture shook, indicating that I had done something wrong with my interlacing options. Most likely I had the field option set wrong, or TMPGen was reinterlacing an already interlaced title.

For my second attempt I used all of the above settings but chose to deinterlace the title using “Double”, and set the output and Not Interlaced (or non-interlaced). Everything else (as far as I know) was the same.

This one played great on WinDVD (with no indication of interlacing at all) and on my Pioneer, but when I played it on the Toshiba it skipped, constantly, like it was pausing after every couple of frames. Audio and Video both skipped.

I know it could be the media, and I have heard of people having problems with much of the generic media out there. But if any has any suggestions, or if they have had more success with what I am trying, it would be great to hear from them.
